The Museum within the Metropolis of New York

The Museum within the City of New York was founded in 1923 to maintain New York City's history. This is a historical past museum as well as an art gallery that gets government support as a non-profit organization. It may be found in Manhattan on the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue. The current location from the museum is in a 5 floor limestone and brick building built in the Neo-Georgian-Colonial style. It was designed by Joseph J. Freedlander and construction lasted from 1928 to 1930. Earlier the museum was in the historic Gracie Mansion looking over the channel in the East River referred to as Hell Gate. Gracie Mansion has become the state residence for the New York City mayor.

There is a comprehensive collection of photos for which the Museum from the City of New York is famous. Jacob August Riis was known as a campaigner towards slums and a public documentary photographer who photographed the poor side of New York. The Riis Collection in the museum houses one of his most famous photos called "5 Cents a Spot."

The American photographer Berenice Abbott was noted for her black-and-white pictures of architecture and urban style of Nyc throughout the 1930s. The museum has a few of her most famous photographs like the Blossom Restaurant, the Flatiron Building, the Greyhound Bus Terminal and Herald Square in Manhattan.

There are lots of other exhibits within the Museum of the City of New York that revolve around the city and the people. As an example, one exhibit is devoted to the history from the city like a main seaport. There are many types of ships displayed in addition to a seven foot statue of the steamship creator.

You will find gown collections which include a frock worn by Barbara Walters. There is another assortment of classic toys that is certain to delight.
